Lost privileges on users in phpmyadmin with the phpmyadmin user after updating Debian 12 to 13

Post by kurgans »

Good morning, everyone.

First, my apologies. I don't speak English and I use a translator, which may cause some misunderstandings.

As the subject line indicates, after updating a Debian 12 to 13 VPS, I see that the phpmyadmin user has lost the privileges it had to manage users, so new users cannot be created outside the panel to assign them to existing databases.

I have manually created a user called kurgans with all the privileges as root, but user management is still not accessible.

I have looked at the phpmyadmin conf files and they appear to be correct.

$cfg[‘Servers’][1] = [
// Authentication type
‘auth_type’ => ‘cookie’,

However, it does not respond to either the user created by default in the panel installation or the user created directly on the mariadb console.

Has anyone noticed this issue after updating and/or been able to solve it?

Thank you.

Hello,

I am not aware of that the dist-upgrade from 12 to 13 removes the GRANT option from root accounts. If this will generally be the case, i guess there would have been some messages in the forum about this.

To fix your issue and create an account, which is able to use the GRANT command and manage other user privileges, you have to create it like this:

Code: Select all

GRANT ALL PRIVILEGES ON *.* TO 'kurgans'@'localhost' IDENTIFIED BY '<YOUR PASSWORD>' WITH GRANT OPTION
With this account you should be able use the user management.
Mit freundlichen Grüßen / Best regards

Good morning

If I understand what you're saying... I have several environments updated from Debian 10 to 13 through the panel and have never had any problems.

But I don't know what's wrong with this one. I already tried what you suggested, and it didn't work. That's why, after looking into it and thinking about it a lot, I decided to post it on the forum to see if anyone else had had a similar problem and could fix it if they posted it.

The thing is, this VPS only has one Angular app and a couple of reverse proxies for some URLs, nothing that could generate that action on the privileges of mariadb users.

The machine was set up on Debian 12 with the latest version of the panel. The panel environment works correctly... it always has. Since I needed to update Java to version 21 and not complicate things too much, I used the Debian 12 to 13 script as usual, and that's when it stopped letting me access users, which is the strange thing.

It's a very small environment. I'm going to redo it directly in Debian 13, make sure phpmyadmin works correctly, and then deploy the app to see if downloading a package can modify anything.
I didn't mention anything about virtualization because it's ESXI and I have several, and there are no problems between them.

I'll get back to you with news once the system is set up again.

Thanks for everything.
