Nowadays things are too complex, for each part there's another need for a "specialist" and only a very few people understand what they're doing.
Back then you could/ have to do all stuff by yourself.
Going to libraries, ordering books, going to kiosks buying magazines on "how do this or that".
Good old times never come back, but maybe i'm just too nostalgic...

Some things were good in the old times, but now with google at your hand you have much more options to learn.
But you still must validate whats is current …
