The use of .local is discouraged.
In earlier days MSCE were taught to use .local, but that was ever since a bad idea.
.local is used for Bonjour (Zeroconf/Avahi).

For my machines at home, I use lab.24unix.net with a local PowerDNS responsible for lab.24unix.net and for resolving, so I don't rely on either my provider or shaby companies like Google or Cloudflare.
